October Afghan Square Recipe

October: Mitered Square with I-cord border

Ingredients: DK- Double Knit Weight Yarn, Knitting needles, perhaps a safety pin or stitch marker

First determine your desired gauge by knitting up a swatch in garter stitch. Then decide on the desired size of your afghan squares.

My afghan squares need to be a nice round 7.5 inches!

(because that is the dimensions of half-pint’s original EZ September potholder turned afghan square)

Construction:  This square will be constructed with the i-cord border on two edges and a double increase at the center stitch on every other row.

Here’s how I calculated how many stitches to CO.

(gauge * afghan square size * 2 sides) + 4 stitches = CO stitches    Round up or down to make an odd number of stitches

(5.75 stitches/inch * 7.5 inches) * 2 sides + 4 extra stitches for i-cord border = 90.25 stitches = 91 stitches

I rounded up to CO 91 stitches because I needed an odd number of stitches so there would be a center stitch for the miter.

CO 91 stitches

Let’s K.I.S.S., we’ll make this first square in garter stitch with just one solid colored yarn. You’ll only have to purl one stitch every other row. Now that is EZ inspired!

Mark your center stitch. EZ suggests the use of safety pins, I use markers, or in this case just a yarnleftover will do since once you have knit a few rows it will become obvious where the center stitch is located.

Row 1: (Wrong side Row) Knit 45 stitches, Yarn Forward & Purl center stitch, Knit until 3 stitches remain (42), yarn forward & slip last 3 stitches as if to purl (tip to tip). Turn work.

Double decrease. Identify Center Stitch.

Row 2: (Right side Row) Knit to one stitch before the center stitch, Slip Next 2 stitches together as if to knit, K1, Pass the 2 slipped stitches over. Continue knitting until 3 stitches remain, Yarn Forward, & slip last 3 stitches as if to purl (tip to tip). Turn work.

Row 3: (WS) Knit 44 stitches, Yarn Forward & Purl center stitch, Knit until 3 stitches remain (41), yarn forward & slip last 3 stitches as if to purl (tip to tip). Turn work.

Row 4: (RS) Knit to one stitch before the center stitch, Slip next 2 stitches together as if to knit, K1, Pass the 2 slipped stitches over. Continue knitting until 3 stitches remain, Yarn Forward, & slip last 3 stitches as if to purl (tip to tip). Turn work.

Continue in this manner, always slipping the last 3 stitches of every row. On Right Side row create a double decrease in the center. On the Wrong Side row purl the center stitch.

Finishing
Continue until you have 7 stitches remaining

WS Row: K3 P1 YF Slip 3  (7 stitches)
RS Row: K2 K2 tog  YF Slip 3  (6 stitches)
Break yarn  and pull tail though all 6 stitches.
Weave in tail if this is to be used as a outside corner of afghan otherwise leave tail for future seaming.

On WS row, identify center stitch by peaking at front.

I-cord border. Yarn Forward, Slip last 3 stitches as if to purl (tip to tip). Turn work. Knit the 3 slipped stitches.
